Character Profile: Haze & Giveaway: "Family Portrait Series" by Gillian Felix

Growing up multi-racial in America – Haze
My name is Haze Christopher Lyndon and I was born in Madison Wisconsin, to an African American mother and Irish American father. Do I have an identity crisis? Nope, I know exactly who I am and what I stand for. Growing up I had a great life in the confines of my parent’s home. Outside that, life was different.
When I was a kid, going out with my mom, people often mistook her for my nanny. On the other hand when I went out with my dad, he was met with sympathy or admiration for adopting a black kid. At school I was either not “black” enough or “white” enough. I never understood what that meant, I’m 22 now and I still don’t understand what that means. As a result I never fit into any groups. I thank my parents, why should anyone have to fit into a group?
Mom never thought me what it meant to be “black” and dad never thought me what it was to be “white”. My parents wanted me to make my own choices, they wanted me to like what I like, not because it belonged to a certain group or it’s what society say I should like.
I am very thankful that my parents have allowed me those freedoms. Because of that I am a strong, independent thinking man. Growing up multi-racial in America is funny because to some groups I am white, and to another I am black. I don’t care to choose. I say be yourself, march to the beat of your own drum, toot your own horn and be proud of who you are, black, white, or both. Don’t allow society to put you in a box. There is no shame or disadvantage of being multi-racial, or any race. The only disadvantage is in the minds of people who have created the box they try to fit you in.
Learn more about Haze in The Family Portrait series: Changes (book 1), The Banovic Siblings (book 2) and Bastard’s Brew (book 3).

Adriana Banovic’s 15th birthday sucked! She got fired after eight years of playing Shayanne Montgomery on the #1 soap in the country, found out that her family was on the verge of bankruptcy and worst of all, forced to return to Westwood Academy. Her only saving grace was a chance glance at dreamy mystery boy Haze Lyndon. Armed with only his picture and a determination to find him—even if it means turning Los Angeles over on its ass.
In this new adult novel you'll meet Robin Banovic, Adriana's father; financially challenged, dealing with the death of a family member and his brother's disappearance. You'll meet Savannah DaCosta aka Savi, mother/manager; Savi enjoys the life her rock star daughter Leighann has provided. When Leighann makes a choice to end her career, Savi sees it as a personal attack.
You'll meet college boy Haze Lyndon; New to Los Angeles, Haze soon realizes how quickly money changes hands in the City of Angels. Will he return to questionable ways to survive or go back to the safety of his family in Wisconsin?

The Banovic Siblings

College boy Kevin Banovic’s casual affair with Savi DaCosta suited him perfectly. Things change when he finds out that Savi is his mom’s high school bestie. When Kevin tries to end their affair, Savi blackmails him. After Kevin rescues Savi’s stepdaughter, L’Wren, from her abusive boyfriend, he can’t stop thinking about her. He must find a way to handle Savi, protect L’Wren, and keep his sanity.
Bad girl Adriana Banovic is pleased with herself for getting her nemesis expelled from Westwood Academy. As feelings between her and her latest victim Haze Lyndon escalate, an unexpected rival discovers her secret and threatens to expose her. With emotions on the line, will her new rival beat her at her own game or end up another casualty of Adriana’s wrath?
Zax Banovic has it all. Tall and handsome, he’s an academic genius, with a killer smile and a heart of gold. When his best friend gets into trouble, he feels responsible and covers for him. But his best friend is not as honorable and has other plans for Zax.
The Banovic Siblings learn that blackmail is a gift that keeps on giving.

Bastard’s Brew

When L'Wren's ex-boyfriend Jeff suddenly disappears, she turns to Kevin to help her find him. With one phone call, Kevin makes sure that Jeff stays hidden and that L'Wren's heart is broken, leaving the door open for Kevin to pursue her. But Kevin is not as free as L'Wren thinks; she is in the dark about his affair with her stepmother, Savi. Savi constantly reminds Kevin of his devious ways and uses their secret to keep him as her toyfriend.
“You don’t deserve to be loved, and you don’t deserve to be happy. You and I are the same … we’re broken inside. Everything we touch, we destroy. We don’t get happily ever after … we don’t get to ride off into the sunset. You know who gets that? L’Wren … she gets it, she gets the guy, and she deserves a decent guy.”- Savi
Kevin desires to be the man that L'Wren deserves, but before he can assume the role of white knight, he brews one last plan to get rid of Savi for good. Will L'Wren, the innocent victim in their twisted game, become a casualty?
Kevin may have sold his body to the devil in stilettos, but he'd be damned if he let her have his heart.

Guy Rogers is extremely attracted to his new realtor, Tom Beaudreaux. As a passionate vegetarian and animal activist, he’s ecstatic that Tom is a kindred soul. He could never be with a carnivore. Unfortunately, Tommy isn’t really a vegetarian or animal activist. He never said he was either, he just didn’t eat meat when he was with Guy. And maybe he emptied his house of all meat and dairy products before inviting Guy over. In fact, Tommy’s family owns the most popular barbecue restaurant in town and if his family has their way, he’ll manage the new location.
When Guy finds out that Tommy eats meat and his family owns a restaurant that is a monument to eating meat, he’s livid and doesn’t know if he wants anything else to do with Tommy.
But then Guy’s life gets crazy –his dad’s paranoia blossoms into violent dementia, he gets arrested for picketing a doggy mill, and then he winds up in even more legal trouble. When Tommy sticks by him through all his trouble and does everything he can to help him, Guy wonders if he’s been too militant and narrow-minded. Perhaps he can learn to live with people who have opposite views.

Gunshots rang out as they turned onto Guy’s street.
Tommy looked at him and mouthed, “Shit! You don’t think…?”
“I hope not. I don’t know.” Guy pressed the gas pedal to the floor and the car shot forward, fish-tailing.
Tommy fisted the door, hanging on tight. “I hope we’re wrong.”
Guy’s intuition told him he wasn’t. His knuckles turned white they held the steering wheel so tightly. Unafraid for himself but scared for his dad, he pulled into his driveway and jumped out of the car, with Tommy close on his heels.
The woman next door ran outside screaming, tearing out her already tattered hair. She pointed at her front door. “Your father’s shooting up my house and is holding a gun at my dad’s head. He’s going to kill him. You’ve got to do something.”
Tommy yelled as he began dialing on his phone, “I’m calling the police.” As if on cue, police sirens blared in the distance and grew louder by the second.
“I’m going in. I have to stop him.”
“Wait for the police. Don’t put yourself in danger,” Tommy ordered forcefully.
“I have to take the chance. He could kill someone before the police get here. I can’t let that happen.” He put himself in harm’s way for animals, so certainly he could risk his life for his own father and other fellow human beings. He had no choice. It would be his fault if someone got hurt.
So he ran through the open door flailing his arms, hoping he would be in time. “Dad! It’s Guy. Don’t do anything. I’m here. You’ll be okay.”
“He’ll be okay? What about me? He’s got a shotgun pointed at my head threatening to blow it off,” the elderly neighbor cried.

Review & Giveaway: "Be My December" by Rachel Brookes

Title: Be My December
Author: Rachel Brookes
Release Date: August 28th
 Genre: Contemporary Romance

I knew the exact moment I’d become a ‘yes’ girl.

December 16th, a cold winter’s night, four years ago.

The night my innocence was stolen, the night I made the mistake of saying no—a mistake I’d never make again.

The dream of a ‘happily ever after' was now a locked away myth. I promised myself that I’d never return to the place of my worst nightmare, that I’d never let anyone get close, but then again, I never thought I’d meet someone like him.

The intense, confident and beautiful Ky Crawford.

I had no plans to become someone’s Prince Charming.

I couldn’t be. I refused to be. My plan was simple—do whatever it takes to correct my biggest mistake, my one regret that now controlled my life.

I was on track. I had plans, but then everything changed when I saw her—the girl in the red jacket, the girl who I was told couldn’t say no.

The reserved yet stunning Eden Rivers.

A girl who can’t say no.
A guy who craves redemption.
A chance encounter?

It all comes down to this.
One question.
One month.

Be My December?

There are scars in life that take away your ability to breath, your ability to care. The depth of Eden's are life altering. Every day is a struggle and she has all but isolated herself because of them. When she gets a job offer that she loves it takes her to the city where it all came down. Her hopes, dreams, and desires diminished in one night.
Eden is such a complex character. My heart truly broke for her. She's been brutalized physically and mentally. The events in the book were cruel and her strength is awe inspiring. It shows just how much power love can bring to a person when they know there is something worth fighting for. She has great friends that show just how much of a loving person she is.
 Then there is Ky. Swoon!
Ky has a plan. He needs to alleviate his guilt and redeem himself. It all starts with her, the one that is ever most on his mind. When he asks Eden for a chance to show her how to live he doesn't realize what he's asking for in the long run.
Ky has tortured himself for four years. He blames himself for events that weren't his fault, but he can't move on. He feels that he doesn't deserve life or happiness. I knew where the story was going with him, but couldn't wait for it to get there. Ky comes off at first as a player type, but once you get under all those good looks he's considerate and sensitive. I love his interaction with Eden and how gentle and slow he goes with her.
The way the story flows seemed time consuming at first. I wanted it to get to the point where we found out what was going on. Once that point was met though I devoured the book. The way the events happened were so much more than I expected. The chemistry between Ky and Eden is so strong and I love how the relationship developed first.
This book is a vibrant 4 stars. It is full of swoony men and gorgeous strong women. These characters are the makings of a great series. I love, love, love Josh and Colby. I can't wait for their books. The dynamics are great and this books deals with a sensitive topic very respectfully.

“I own you. I have the piece of paper to prove it. It’s undeniable and unbreakable. You belong to me until you’ve paid off your debts.”
Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Being the first born daughter, her life is forfeit to the first born son of the Hawks to pay for sins of ancestors past. The dark ages might have come and gone, but debts never leave. She has no choice in the matter.
She is no longer free.
Jethro Hawk receives Nila as an inheritance present on his twenty-ninth birthday. Her life is his until she’s paid off a debt that’s centuries old. He can do what he likes with her—nothing is out of bounds—she has to obey.
There are no rules. Only payments.
A modern day Dark Erotic Romance

debt inheritance teaser.jpg

Upon turning 29 Jethro finds out that he has inherited something he wasn't quite expecting. The first born of the Weaver, a woman. A woman who happens to be very famous and just launched a new line of clothing via a fashion show in Milan. The way everything goes down is just WOW! You have an uber hot guy that has the whole vibrates darkness and lust persona down pat. What isn't apparent is just how much of that is real and lethal.
Bring in Nila, she's been sheltered her whole life. Thanks to her brooding and domineering father and brother she has had very limited experience with the opposite sex. To the point that she comes off priggish and uptight. She has desires, but maintains them in her own way. When introduced to Jethro, she's thrown off. There's temptation there, but something else is there as well.
This book is truly dark and twisted. It's a modern read with a regency feel at times. This family is definitely into their roots and rules. The ending shocked me and left me turning the page ready to scream. It's a cliffy and the next part can't get here too soon! This book will pull you into the story and you won't want to escape it. I felt like I was right there with Squirrel myself.
I'm anxious to see who Kite007 is. I have some theories. I love the way the back story to the debt is given piece by piece. Of course, we still don't have all the story. What did the Weavers do? Gah! Book 2 First Debt needs to be here soon to answer all my questions.
This is a 5 star book. I wish it wasn't a cliffy, but love the way the story flowed and ebbed. The premise for the book is amazing. It's unlike anything I've read before and I've read plenty. Love it and can't wait to see how the rest of the series unfolds.

Excerpt: Debt Inheritance:  Meet Jethro & Nina

debt inheritance teaser 4.jpg
ONE - Nina's POV
Huge disappointment, Ms. Weaver.” His cold glare sent a snowstorm wiping away the bonfire in my belly. “I’m done playing games, so cut the bullshit. Time to begin the day.” His voice gave no room for interpretation. A cold draft shot down my back.
My brief reprieve from debts and horrible Hawks was over. I’d been shown something I desperately wanted, but denied it because I failed to please him.
“You could teach me…show me how…” I couldn’t make eye contact with him. Mortification painted my cheeks for both admitting I was clueless and asking a monster to coach me.
Jethro laughed. “You think that will save you from what’s coming? Was that your little plan? To make me fuck you in the hopes I might feel something for you?”

debt inheritance teaser 3.jpg
TWO - Jethro's POV

I stood up slowly, clicking my tongue. “Ah, ah, ah, Ms. Weaver. Don’t take that tone with me. You’re the failure. You’re the prisoner. You take what I give you. You do not assume to have any say or authority. That includes listening to everything I deem important to tell you.” Ghosting to a stop in front of her, I murmured, “Is that quite understood?”
I flexed my muscles, welcoming back the soothing chillness of control. I hadn’t liked stepping outside my confines of civility. Things got messy when silence was disrupted. Things got rushed when tempers rose and curses flowed.
And I didn’t want to rush her undoing. I wanted to savour it. Devour it.
